UK scientists are proposing that bacteria might offer a way of cleaning up future marine oil spills. The scientists from Bangor University in Wales think that microbes – found naturally in the sea – might be able to draw on the oil as a source of nourishment and tests of their theory seems to suggest that the method could be used at a variety of sites.
The microbes are common to all oceans and are found on minute algae forms. Conditions exist to ensure that the numbers of these microbes present in the water are kept in check, and these include the types of food that they can eat.
Microbes: Oil Spills The release of the Welsh microbiologists’ microbe oil spill clean-up research coincides with ongoing efforts in the Gulf of Mexico to contain the oil spill created after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig.
“The oil spill is an alternative digestible food source for these microbes”, Doctor Christoph Gertler – representing the university’s School of Biological Sciences – stated in an online new release. “Although probably present in the Gulf of Mexico, for example, a shortage of other essential nutrients limits their growth in numbers.”
“What we have trialled is adding the nutrients these organisms need in the form of a fertilizer, in a containing boom, for example.
“This enables the microbes to multiply and, in the process, to break down and digest the pollutant.”
Oil Spill Clean Up The microbiologists’ initial trial saw them test out the bacteria using 500ml of heavy-grade oil and they achieved a 95 per cent success rate. In a further trial using 500 litres of oil, the microbes were used along with another material capable of absorbing the oil and, this time, “virtually everything” was removed, according to Doctor Gertler.
For the future, he and his colleagues are looking to see how the microbes manage to clean up a real-life oil spill. “The potential for bioremediation, as this technique is called, is huge”, he added.
“It is, I believe, the only technique that would effectively remove oil that is distributed over such large distances as are being seen in the current Gulf of Mexico oil spill.”

North Korea warns it will meet war with 'all-out war'

Seoul, South Korea (CNN) -- North Korea reacted to a South Korean anti-submarine exercise early Thursday by saying it would meet "confrontation with confrontation" and war with "all-out war," according to North Korean state-run media.
"Now that the puppet group challenged the DPRK [North Korea] formally and blatantly, the DPRK will react to confrontation with confrontation, and to a war with an all-out war," according the KCNA news agency.
The news agency referred to South Korean leaders as a "group of traitors" and said they would experience "unheard of disastrous consequences" if they misunderstand North Korea's will.
Iranian naval forces have detected a US nuclear submarine in the Persian Gulf waters, amid growing concerns over the safety of one of the most important energy routes in the world.
An Iranian patrol on Thursday spotted the nuclear-armed and -powered submarine in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which allows the passage of 90 percent of the oil produced by Persian Gulf states to Asia, the US and Western Europe.
There are currently 48 logistic and 18 combat US vessels in the Persian Gulf waters, among them the USS-Eisenhower aircraft carrier.
Experts say aside from the risk of ecologically disastrous accidents, the presence of a nuclear submarine in a narrow waterway also poses a threat of nuclear pollution.
In 2009, a US Navy Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered submarine collided with a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock in the strait. The incident caused a spillage of nearly 25-thousand gallons of diesel fuel.
In 2007, a submerged US nuclear vessel collided with a huge Japanese crude tanker in the south of the strait.

Pig virus contaminates rotavirus vaccines, but FDA says no problem
(NaturalNews) Rotavirus vaccines are commonly given to children, and this year's batch of vaccines made by GlaxoSmithKline and Merck are contaminated with a pig virus, the FDA recently discovered. So the FDA called a meeting to determine whether injecting a pig virus into the bodies of young children might be some sort of problem requiring a recall of the vaccines.
Can you guess what conclusion the agency reached? As reported by Reuters, the FDA concluded "...it was safe for doctors to resume giving patients Glaxo's Rotarix and continue using Merck's Rotateq. The agency said there was no evidence the contamination caused any harm..."
In other words, as long as they can bury the evidence and deny any link between vaccines and health problems -- which has been the standard excuse of the FDA for decades -- they can continue to claim the vaccines are safe enough to inject into little children.
Never mind the fact that the pig virus found in the vaccines actually causes a wasting disease in baby pigs, giving them intense diarrhea and causing them to rapidly lose weight. DNA from these viruses was detected in the "master cells" used to make the vaccines.
Suppressing the evidence of harmAn FDA advisory panel said the risk to human health from the viral contamination was only "theoretical." But of course it's easy to claim anything is "theoretical" if you suppress the evidence that it's real. By simply ignoring any reports of neurological side effects from the vaccine, the FDA can always claim there is "no evidence" of harm. Well, no evidence they're willing to accept as real, anyway.
And that's how vaccine science works these days: Suppress any evidence of harm, deny any links between vaccines and neurological problems, then okay practically any viral contamination from any animal and declare it's all safe to be injected directly into the bodies of infants and children. On Wednesday Obama Took the First Major Step in a Plan to Ban All Firearms in the United States
On Wednesday the Obama administration took its first major step in a plan to ban all firearms in the United States. The Obama administration intends to force gun control and a complete ban on all weapons for US citizens through the signing of international treaties with foreign nations. By signing international treaties on gun control, the Obama admin. can use the US State Department to bypass the normal legislative process in Congress. Once the US Government signs these international treaties, all US citizens will be subject to those gun laws created by foreign governments. These are laws that have been developed and promoted by organizations such as the United Nations and individuals such as George Soros and Michael Bloomberg. The laws are designed and intended to lead to the complete ban and confiscation of all firearms. The Obama administration is attempting to use tactics and methods of gun control that will inflict major damage to our 2nd Amendment before US citizens even understand what has happened.
Obama can appear before the public and tell them that he does not intend to pursue any legislation (in the United States) that will lead to new gun control laws, while cloaked in secrecy, his Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton is committing the US to international treaties and foreign gun control laws. Does that mean Obama is telling the truth?
What it means is that there will be no publicized gun control debates in the media or votes in Congress. We will wake up one morning and find that the United States has signed a treaty that prohibits firearm and ammunition manufacturers from selling to the public. We will wake up another morning and find that the US has signed a treaty that prohibits any transfer of firearm ownership. And then, we will wake up yet another morning and find that the US has signed a treaty that requires US citizens todeliver any firearm they own to the local government collection and destruction center or face imprisonment.
